After being in panama for almost two months now and not learned anything about pirates, we decided to go to Portobelo, the famous pirate location. On the bus ride over there we met a guy named Dan, who was staying in the same hostel as us. We walked up the slight hill to the hostel we were staying at and oddly enough, after climbing the stairs, a small furry monkey jumped at us. Startled, I jumped back and the monkey jumped away. After wards I saw it on a leash. We set our bags down and checked in. We were staying in a room with 4 bunks. There was a french couple on the bottom one aside from me. I was on the top.
The next day we went down to town with Dan and realized that it wasn’t even a town, it was more like a village . After that we went into a park down by the sea and saw the cannons and stonewalls and everything from the pirate age. I was getting hungry so we went to a small local restaurant. I kept listening to my mom try to tell the waitress that she didn’t want a face on her fish and chuckled to myself. While waiting for our food to come, a conversation started. Eventually we got to a point where Dan said that he once blew up a mosquito by squeezing the skin and the mosquito got stuck and eventually exploded. Epic.
The day after that, my mom and i went snorkeling. Somebody took us on a boat to an island to snorkel. There weren’t very many fish on this deserted little island and we didn’t snorkel very much. My mom laid on the beach while i swam looking for sea glass. A few more people arrived on the island and it became crowded. My mom started a conversation with a Nicaraguan and a Guatemalan with what little Spanish she knew.Eventually, the boat came and we left. On our way back to the hostel, we stopped and grabbed a sandwich. It was pretty good. Nothing particularly exciting happened the next few days.
We went back to Panama City with a friend. When we got back we grabbed a bagel.
That was our brief trip to Portobelo.
