Austria: Composers and Snow
There are a number of things to see and do in this picturesque landlocked country, with ski holidays in Austria being particularly popular. The Alpine landscape dominates much of the country and only 32 per cent of the land mass is below 500 metres, while the highest point is at 3,798 metres. In the winter thousands of people flock to the region to take part in winter sports. In the country where Mozart composed his symphonies and Strauss gesticulated his way to mesmerising music skiing is king.
The tradition of skiing originated in the Alps and although it originated from a need to hunt effectively, it eventually became a sport. To this day thousands of people flock to resorts like St Anton in search of amazing snow, great après ski and delicious Alpine foods. Austria in particular is known for its amazing landscapes and picture perfect alpine views in both the summer and winter months. When there is no snow to be had many people flock to the region in search of walking and adventure opportunities – they are never disappointed.
Akin to fairy tales many of the Alpine villages have a quaint, picturesque appeal. With low gabled houses, wooden chalets and heart-warming bars, there is something comforting about a holiday in Austria. This is best enjoyed in the winter months, as the snow forces you to wrap up warm and hanker down in the evening – maybe even listen to some classic Austrian music.
Austria although known for its contributions to the world of classical music offers so much more to the traveller. A winter week spent in Austria is the closest you can come to a postcard Christmas. And with warming wine, fine food and some amazing skiing you could do worse for a winter trip.
