It was time for Miro’s 11 birthday and even though we are on the road, I always want to make sure that Miro does not feel like he is missing out on anything, especially birthdays and holidays. So, a party it is!!
We invited 16 kids, enlisted the help of 5 adults, and proudly sported one of the 30 mustaches made especially for the occasion. I hired Don Pepe, Miro’s shuttle driver to transport the group to and from Chuckie Cheese in Guatemala City. The kids arrived at the home and we sat them down, one by one to apply one the felt custom mustaches we made the day before. The girls really surprised me, sat patiently as the mustached me, applied mustaches on them, giggling and laughing.
We piled into the mustached Don Pepe’s shuttled, squished, crowded and giddy as we made our way to the city. Not surprisingly, Chuckie Cheese in Guatemala is just like Chuckie Cheese in the states. (Needless to say, I’ve had enough Chuckie Cheese to last a lifetime.)
The kids played and played, ran around, shouted and had a great time.
The adults drank tequila from the bottle that was mysteriously found in my purse and we played, ran around and shouted too.
After two and half hours, a hungry and exhausted group piled back into the shuttle, headed for Antigua. Pizza arrived soon thereafter, and it was immediately inhaled.
This party was one that just kept on going…..and for the next main event, time to whack the creepy Michael Jackson pinata, Juan Pablo’s contribution. Whoever made this pinata had a sick sense of humor. The pinata had quite a bulge in the crotch area and provided an extra compartment for candy. The kids beat the shit out Michael Jackson, not thinking anyone of those kids were actually a fan. The candy flew out as the poor, helpless Michal Jackson broke into pieces.
After the pinata, we enjoyed a scrumptiously rich chocolate cake and sang the Spanish version of Happy Birthday!
What an amazing fun filled birthday party, made wonderful through the help of our friends in Guatemala. I’m so pleased Miro had the opportunity to welcome in his eleventh year with so gusto.

What a fun idea for a party! And as small town coincidences would have it, I know that little Boy Elik (sp) – I became pretty good friends with his dad, Roberto, the month that I was in Antigua! I wish I had checked couchsurfing and known to meet up with you both, but I’ll follow along now! 🙂

Shannon! Yes, what a small world it is! I know Roberto and Alec too, of course. I’m wondering if we passed each other on the streets at some point. I’m certain we did. I love your blog and thank you so much for visiting mine (under development) blog as well. Perhaps we’ll find ourselves in the same place at the same time, next time.
